Built differently

Atmosphere without losing the app.

01

Interactive by design

Project picker, suggestion cards, task content, sidebar, menus, and composer remain real Codex controls.

02

Swap the artwork

Use a wide image to create a home banner, quiet task background, accent palette, and frosted content layers.

03

Safe rollback path

Restore stops the injector and reopens Codex normally. The official application bundle remains untouched.

Platform comparison

Choose the right Codex theme mode.

Native colors are simplest. Dream Skin adds background artwork and richer visual layers, with different capabilities on each platform.

Know the boundary

Local, reversible, and unofficial.

The theme uses Chromium DevTools Protocol on your computer. CDP is powerful and has no same-user authentication, so only run trusted local software while a themed session is active.

It does not modify .app, app.asar, WindowsApps, your API key, or your model provider settings.

FAQ

Before you install.

What is Codex Dream Skin?

Codex Dream Skin is an unofficial open-source theme layer for Codex Desktop. It uses a local CDP connection to apply backgrounds, colors and decorative layers while keeping native Codex controls interactive.

Is Codex Dream Skin free?

Yes. The source code is available on GitHub under the MIT license. Always download it from the original repository and review the latest instructions before installing.

Is CodexSkin an official OpenAI product?

No. CodexSkin is an independent community website for the open-source Codex Dream Skin project. Codex and OpenAI trademarks belong to their respective owners.

Does it modify the Codex app or app.asar?

No. The project launches the official Codex Desktop app with a local-loopback CDP connection and injects the visual theme at runtime. It does not patch the official app bundle, WindowsApps files, or code signature.

Can I restore the original Codex appearance?

Yes. Both macOS and Windows include a restore flow. The project is designed to be reversible.

Which platforms are supported?

The current open-source project supports Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, plus Windows. Custom image selection is currently available on macOS.

Do I need Node.js?

Windows requires Node.js 22 or newer. The macOS workflow validates and uses the Node runtime bundled with the signed Codex app, so a separate global Node.js installation is not required.
